Historically, Africa was labelled as a continent characterised with abject poverty, corruption and mismanagement. In today’s world, however, Many people have acknowledged the growth in the African economy. Post financial crisis, investors now give Africa the attention she deserves. However many people still attribute her success to her abundance in natural resources such as cocoa and crude oil. They fail to acknowledge the rapid growth in other sectors such as Telecommunications, Financial Services, Infrastructure, Energy, retail and consumer products.
For example, there is a growing middle class population who increasingly demand reliable power supply and infrastructure. Many governments in countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana have responded to this by starting their own independent power procurement programmes, which aims to procure new renewable, coal, and natural gas to keep the lights on. This is only one example out of several sectors in the African economy that is growing. It is important that we discuss & acknowledge other growing sectors in the economy besides natural resources.
